Ecobar® composite rebar delivers lower embodied carbon, corrosion-free performance, and a domestic supply chain — built for a construction industry under growing pressure to decarbonize.
CRL is Ireland's first dedicated GFRP (Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer) composite reinforcement manufacturer, producing Ecobar® as a high-performance, lower-carbon alternative to steel rebar. As embodied carbon regulation and ESG reporting requirements tighten across the construction sector, Ecobar® offers contractors, precast manufacturers, and infrastructure clients a certified path to lower-impact builds without compromising on strength or durability.
Decarbonizing Concrete Construction
~65% lower embodied carbon than conventional steel reinforcement
2–3x tensile strength of steel, at roughly a quarter of the weight
Zero corrosion risk — no rebar degradation, no concrete spalling
Ireland's first dedicated GFRP manufacturing facility
First to Market, Built to Scale
The global shift toward low-carbon construction materials and stricter embodied-carbon regulation is accelerating demand for corrosion-resistant, high-performance alternatives to steel. CRL is positioned to meet that demand as Ireland's first domestic GFRP rebar producer — building local manufacturing capacity, reducing import dependency, and establishing an early foothold in a fast-growing category of the construction materials market.
An Innovative Solution for Reinforcement in Construction
Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) rebar is an innovative replacement for traditional carbon steel as a rust-proof, lightweight, and high-strength composite material made of glass fibers and polymer resin.
Key Innovative Advantages
Complete Corrosion Resistance: Unlike steel, GFRP rebar never rusts or corrodes when exposed to moisture, de-icing salts, or harsh chemicals, completely eliminating "concrete cancer" and extending structural lifespans up to 80–100 years.
High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: It is roughly four times lighter than steel yet has a tensile strength that can be more than double that of steel rebar in tension-heavy applications.
Easier and Faster Installation: Because it is about 80% lighter than steel, it cuts handling, transport, and labor requirements significantly, allowing projects to be completed in a fraction of the time with fewer workers and less heavy machinery.
Electrically and Magnetically Neutral: GFRP does not conduct electricity, heat, or cold, and it is non-magnetic, making it invaluable for specialized environments like MRI rooms, industrial flooring, and toll plazas etc.
Reduced Cracking and Better Bonding: Modern manufacturing allows for specialized surface textures (such as sand-coated or rope-like ribs) that bond exceptionally well with concrete, reducing crack sizes and spreading structural loads more evenly.
Key Benefits of Ecobar®
Ecobar® is highly resistant to corrosion, making it ideal for construction in harsh environments or structures exposed to moisture, chemicals, and saltwater. Unlike traditional steel rebars, which are prone to rust and corrosion over time, Ecobar® does not corrode, ensuring long-term durability and minimizing maintenance costs.
1
Corrosion Resistance
Ecobar® is significantly lighter than steel rebar. This lightweight nature simplifies handling, transportation, and installation processes, reducing labor and equipment requirements. It also contributes to improved structural efficiency by reducing dead loads on the concrete structures, leading to potential cost savings.
2
Lightweight
Despite its lightweight nature, Ecobar® exhibits high tensile strength and can withstand heavy loads. It offers excellent structural performance and can be designed to meet specific project requirements. The high strength of Ecobar® minimizes the risk of structural failure and enhances overall safety..
3
High Strength
Electrical and Thermal Insulation
4
Ecobar® has excellent electrical and thermal insulation properties. It does not conduct electricity or heat, making it suitable for applications where electrical or thermal conductivity needs to be restricted, such as in structures near power lines or in areas prone to temperature fluctuations.
Ecobar® is non-magnetic, which makes it suitable for use in sensitive areas where magnetic interference may cause issues, such as MRI facilities, research laboratories, or electronic equipment installations.
5
Non-Magnetic
Ecobar® has low thermal expansion and contraction characteristics, providing dimensional stability to the reinforced concrete structure. This stability helps to minimize cracking, maintain structural integrity, and reduce the need for maintenance and repairs.
6
Dimensional Stability
Ecobar® can be easily customized and manufactured to meet specific project requirements. It can be produced in various shapes, sizes, and configurations, allowing for design flexibility and ease of installation in complex structures.
7
Design Flexibility
Ecobar® is environmentally friendly as its production requires fewer resources and generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to steel manufacturing. Additionally, its long lifespan and resistance to corrosion eliminate the need for regular replacements, contributing to sustainable construction practices.
